Siuslaw River forecast to flood

Forecasters issued a flood warning for the Siuslaw River at Mapleton.

At 5 a.m. Friday, the river was at 16.7 feet.

Flood stage is 18 feet. By Saturday morning, the river will approach 22 feet.

Forecasters said to expect widespread flooding of low-lying land.

Numerous rural roads along and near the siuslaw river will likely be flooded, and water historically begins to cover the lower sections of Highway 126 at this stage.

Keller Creek closed through May 15

From USDA Forest Service

Logging operations near Forest Service Road 5590, locally known as Keller Creek, will temporarily close the road to through traffic between mile post 1 and Forest Service Road 5500.

The road will be closed through May 15. Stationary logging equipment will be blocking the road.

Keller Creek day use area is still accessible via Forest Service Road 5590 from Yachats River Road. Expect increased log haul activity on Forest Service Road 5500 between Forest Service Road 5590 and Highway 101 at the Cape Perpetua Campground.

Two-way traffic has been restored on U.S. 101, four-and-a-half miles south of Newport, where the highway foundation that had given way during last week’s powerful storm.
