Summer hours at garbage transfer sites start April 1

Lane County’s Waste Management Division will change to its spring/summer hour schedule on April 1 at some of the transfer sites.
 
Spring/summer operating hour changes include opening on Sundays at Glenwood and an increase of two hours at some of our smaller transfer stations. Most transfer station’s hours remain the same year round.
 
Spring/summer hours start Sunday, April 1, and go through September 30, 2012.
 
 
Transfer Site spring/summer Hours

  • Glenwood Central Receiving Station, Florence and Veneta:  8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday;  Glenwood only:  8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday
  • Cottage Grove, Creswell and Oakridge:  8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday
  • Marcola, Rattlesnake and Vida:  8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday
  • London, Mapleton, Sharps Creek and Walton:  8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays
  • Low Pass and Swisshome:  8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays
  • McKenzie Bridge:  1- 6 p.m., Monday and Thursday; 8 a.m.

Volunteers needed at Cape Perpetua

YACHATS, Ore. - Do you enjoy talking with visitors and love to learn new things? If so, the Siuslaw National Forest is looking for fun and friendly volunteers to assist staff engage and guide the public visiting Cape Perpetua Scenic Area.

“Cape Perpetua Scenic Area is a fabulous natural attraction,” said Lori Robertson Cape Perpetua Visitor Center Director. “Located just 3 miles south of Yachats, we consider ourselves part of the local community.”

The Scenic Area is known for hiking trails, an incredible view from the top of Cape Perpetua, old growth Sitka Spruce forests, tidepools, mushrooming and whale watching. In the summer the main visitor center and the Devil's Churn information booth are hopping with 300 to 600 visitors per day. In the off-season things slow down.

“Typically, volunteers help us meet our staffing needs throughout the year,” said Robertson. “Without them, we would not be able to serve the public or offer all our programs each day.”

Siuslaw forest offices closed for MLK Day

In honor of the Martin Luther King , Jr. Holiday, Siuslaw National Forest Offices will be closed on Monday, January 16.

This closure includes: the Hebo Ranger District in Hebo, Forest Headquarters in Corvallis, Central Coast Ranger District-Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area offices in Waldport and Florence, and the Cape Perpetua and Oregon Dunes Visitor Centers.

Though offices are closed Monday, Forest Service is waiving fees at trailheads and Forest Service-managed day use sites January 14-16 for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday weekend.

The Forest Service office located in Florence will be reducing its hours of operation beginning January 30. The office will be open to the public 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, closed Saturday through Tuesday. 

Recreation passes, maps, visitor information and special forest product permits, including firewood, will be available at the Florence office during its business hours

Landslide closes Boundary Road

YACHATS, Ore. - A landslide has closed the Boundary Road on the Siuslaw National Forest until repairs can be made.

“Currently, we are having our specialist assess the damage and determine what will need to be done to open this road as soon as possible,” said Pam Gardner, Central Coast Ranger District  and Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area District Ranger. “We regret any inconvenience that this may cause.”

The slide on Forest Service Road 5800, locally known as the Boundary Road, is located near the 27 mile marker.

As a result, the Boundary Road is closed at the intersection with Fairview Road (FS Road 1055) going south and Big Creek Road (County Road 5084) heading north.

The slide is located about 300 yards south of the junction of the Boundary road with Fairview Road. Both Fairview Road (FS Road 1055) and Big Creek Road are open at this time. 

Travelers intending to head north on the Boundary road from either Big Creek Road or the North Fork of the Siuslaw River Road will need to detour to Highway 101 north to Fairview Road where they can access the Boundary Road heading north again, the Forest Service said.

Meetings on changes to Oregon beach rules

Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) will seek public comments on Oregon administrative rule changes affecting Oregon’s ocean shore. OPRD is responsible for the management of the ocean shore state recreation area under OAR 736-021-0060.

These rules were last revised in 1996. Since then, the numbers of visitors and kinds of recreation have grown and changed, as have natural resource protection activities.  The current draft rule changes, as well as historical and cultural sites, on the ocean shore, and make it easier for visitors to understand and locate all rules pertinent to ocean shore management.

A high surf advisory remains in effect through 10 a.m. Friday for the central Oregon coast.

Forecasters predict powerful breakers in the surf zone, creating dangers for beachcombers and the threat of minor erosion.

"It is dangerous to venture near the water under high surf conditions," the National Weathe Service said. "People have drowned after being swept away from rocks and jetties while observing high surf or after being knocked down by logs and other debris."
